Foreign media: Institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences have, based on millions of satellite images from 2022, created the first global annual map of coastal aquaculture pond changes, with the findings published in Science Bulletin.

The study shows that global aquaculture pond areas expanded rapidly from 1990 to 2016, but declined overall after 2017, with significant variations among countries: India became the largest source of growth due to rising seafood demand, expanding by 676 square kilometers (a 19% increase) between 2017 and 2022; meanwhile, China saw its coastal aquaculture area shrink at the fastest rate globally—18.1%—during the same period, thanks to wetland protection and restoration policies, despite still maintaining the world's densest aquaculture network.

The article points out that China's reduction in aquaculture ponds is a positive signal.
