Six Years Later: U.S. Congressional Delegation Visits China, Calls for Resuming Military Dialogue
A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation led by Democratic Representative Adam Smith visited Beijing. The U.S. side called for enhanced official cooperation and communication between the two countries, and for resuming military dialogue between the United States and China.
The Associated Press reported that this is a rare visit by U.S. congressmen to China since the deterioration of Sino-U.S. relations. The last senatorial delegation visited Beijing in 2023, while this week marks the first time since 2019 that a U.S. House delegation has visited China.
Smith said, "We both acknowledge that both countries need to work to strengthen the relationship, and the visit of U.S. House members should not happen once every seven years as it does now."
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Smith said both sides reached an agreement on the overall goals of this visit. "Of course, trade and economy are the primary goals... (but at the same time) we also place great importance on the dialogue between the two militaries," he said. "As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I am deeply concerned about the lack of communication between our militaries."
The delegation also included Republican Representative Michael Baumgartner from the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Democratic Representatives Ro Khanna and Christy Horan from the House Armed Services Committee. The delegation will remain in China until Thursday.
