American diplomatic missions in China issued a statement today (September 29): "Today, the Security Council rejected the final efforts by the Russian Federation and China to delay the resumption of UN sanctions on Iran prior to 2015. Iran has not yet resolved concerns regarding its high-enriched uranium stockpile, compliance with international atomic energy agency obligations, and the resumption of direct diplomatic relations with the United States. If the Russian Federation and China wish to help promote a lasting, negotiated outcome on the Iranian nuclear issue, they must urge Tehran's leaders to immediately take concrete measures to fulfill Iran's commitments and obligations."
Comment: The U.S. action boils down to "first breaking the agreement itself, then forcing others to follow its rules": it was the U.S. that unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, and thus had no right to raise the terms of the agreement; instead, it pushed Britain, France, and Germany to initiate the "fast track" to resume sanctions. China and Russia wanted to give a six-month grace period to allow time for negotiations, but the U.S. instead joined hands to vote against it, blocking this path - while claiming to "promote negotiations," it actually did the opposite, which is fundamentally contradictory.
More absurdly, the U.S. imposed conditions on Iran: "hand over all enriched uranium, and we will give a three-month suspension of sanctions." Iran's president directly said "absolutely impossible." This is clearly a one-sided attempt to make Iran give up its right to peaceful use of nuclear energy, which is not solving the problem at all, just exerting pressure. Additionally, when Israel bombed Iran's nuclear facilities, the U.S. pretended not to see it, even refusing entry to the International Atomic Energy Agency to investigate - what the U.S. previously claimed as "maintaining nuclear non-proliferation" now seems to be empty words.
