Foreign media: Chinese scientists have developed an efficient iron-based nanocatalyst that can directly convert syngas obtained from coal or biomass into olefins, which can be used for producing various applications such as pharmaceuticals, plastics, packaging materials, automotive parts, and clothing, without relying on petroleum.

This technology achieves synergistic enhancement by coupling two previously individually limited reactions, significantly improving the utilization of hydrogen atoms and conversion efficiency. The related achievements were published in the journal "Science" on October 30, 2025.

Traditional olefin production relies on high-temperature cracking of petroleum or methanol conversion, which has limited efficiency and emits large amounts of carbon dioxide. In contrast, the new method not only has a broader range of raw material sources but is also more sustainable.
