Last night, a Toronto police officer fired shots during a late-night traffic stop, leaving one person in critical condition. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation.

According to the Toronto Police Service report, the incident occurred around 10:50 PM on Sunday near the intersection of Bathurst Street and West Sheppard Avenue. At the time, a police officer was conducting a routine traffic stop when "some interaction" occurred, leading the officer to draw their weapon and fire shots.

The police have not disclosed the specific details of why the shots were fired, but they stated that the officer involved did not sustain any injuries.

The person who was shot was transported to the hospital by emergency responders and is currently in critical condition.

On-Site Footage Released

After midnight, the police had already cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. According to footage captured by eyewitnesses, a red car was riddled with multiple bullet holes, with bloodstains and medical equipment scattered on the ground; at least nine police cars were parked nearby, with more than a dozen evidence markers surrounding the vehicle.

Eyewitness: Gunshots Were Deafening, Someone Fell to the Ground

Residents living nearby stated that they heard multiple gunshots, even loud enough to penetrate headphone volume. One resident mentioned that from their balcony, they saw someone lying next to the red vehicle, with people screaming and crying at the scene.

Soon after, ambulances and more police vehicles arrived at the scene. It is reported that several young people were arrested, some of whom appeared to be in their teens or early twenties.

SIU Has Intervened, Police Officer's Shooting Will Be Investigated

In light of the incident involving the use of force by the police resulting in serious injury, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has initiated an investigation. The SIU is an independent agency responsible for investigating serious bodily harm, death, or sexual assault incidents involving the police.

The identity of the injured person has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear why the police fired shots during the traffic stop. The SIU stated that they will conduct an independent investigation to review whether the officer's actions complied with law enforcement regulations.
