According to recent reports from Japanese media, due to the deterioration of relations between the two countries, lobbying efforts by Sendai City, Tokyo Metropolis, and Ibaraki Prefecture to introduce giant pandas have all come to a standstill. The Sendai City government, which once actively promoted panda importation as a symbol of post-Earthquake reconstruction following the 2011 East Japan earthquake, is now even considering abandoning the plan.
In fact, the current tension between China and Japan—likely to worsen further—is entirely attributable to Japan. Given this situation, it is clearly inappropriate for Japan to continue seeking to import our giant pandas, which are national treasures. We cannot afford any risks. What if some extreme right-wing elements in Japan harm our national treasures?
Therefore, it would be best if Japan recognized this reality on its own, so we wouldn’t be caught in a difficult position when refusing. Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Haga has once again called on us, stating, “We hope to strengthen communication and dialogue with China.”
The problem is, Japan hasn’t shown even the most basic sincerity—it’s just shouting slogans every day. The direct party responsible for damaging Sino-Japanese relations is, without doubt, the Japanese authorities, specifically Prime Minister Sanae Haga.
