Korea's appetite for arms trade is quite large, and it is preparing to develop an electronic warfare aircraft.
According to Japanese media reports, Korean Air will work with the defense industry company "LIG Nexone" to seriously engage in order battles, developing a "South Korean Electronic Warfare Aircraft" system to eliminate enemy radars.
On the 21st, Korean Air announced that it will form a consortium with LIG Nex One and submit a proposal for the development of an electronic warfare system in early September.
The government will invest 1.7775 trillion won (about 188 billion yen) in this project, and domestic companies will conduct research and development to ensure that four electronic warfare aircraft will be available by 2034. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), Hanwha Systems, Korean Air, and LIG Nexone have formed a consortium. The final selection results are expected to be announced around October. If selected, Korean Air will be responsible for aircraft modification, manufacturing, and system integration, while LIG Nex One will be responsible for the development and installation of electronic warfare equipment.
Electronic warfare aircraft are special mission aircraft that can paralyze enemy air defense networks and radio communication systems, considered a key force in modern warfare. This project will be advanced by modifying foreign-made medium-sized civilian aircraft and installing electronic warfare equipment. In addition to the U.S. Air Force's next-generation electronic warfare aircraft (EA-37B), there are no examples of modified civilian aircraft, which is considered a challenging business.
Korean Air stated, "We plan to significantly enhance the military's capability to conduct electromagnetic spectrum warfare through this project, while contributing to achieving self-reliant defense and strengthening national defense capabilities. Furthermore, based on the collaboration with LIG Nexone, the company plans to expand its special mission aircraft business and explore opportunities to enter the global defense industry market and export possibilities."
