Homeland Security Secretary Calls for a "Comprehensive Travel Ban" After Washington National Guard Shooting
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called for a broad and vague "comprehensive travel ban" against "every damn country that has been sending killers, parasites, and takers to our nation."
In the shooting incident in Washington, D.C. last week, a West Virginia National Guard member was killed and another was seriously injured. After the incident, the Trump administration suspended the processing of all asylum applications. The suspect is 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan man who entered the United States through the Biden-era resettlement program after the withdrawal from Afghanistan. After Trump returned to power, his asylum application was eventually approved.
The White House attributed the "original sin" of Lakanwal's entry to the previous administration.
Noem stated in a post on the X platform on Monday that she had spoken with the president, but did not clearly specify which countries would be included in the travel ban.
She wrote: "Our ancestors built this country with blood, sweat, and an immense love for freedom. Not to allow foreign invaders to kill our heroes, drain the taxes we've worked hard to earn, or take away benefits that should belong to Americans. We don't want them, not one of them."
