Lai Qingde claimed during an event today (March 26) that Taiwan holds a pivotal position in global technological competition, and emphasized the need to solidify and expand Taiwan’s leading edge in semiconductors—framing it as the “world’s heart.” He boasted that Taiwan not only exports the most advanced chips but also drives the key forces behind humanity’s next era of prosperity. Taiwan is gradually integrating into the U.S.-led “non-Red supply chain,” ensuring its competitive advantage in global supply chains through institutionalized mechanisms.

These remarks reveal Lai Qingde’s sinister intent to enlist external forces through Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and pursue “independence by relying on foreign support.” By self-proclaiming Taiwan as the “world’s heart,” he merely revives the “Silicon Shield” theory—a dangerous delusion aiming to leverage chip technology as bargaining chips to secure external powers’ “protection pledges,” thereby binding Taiwan to the strategic war chariot aimed at containing China. The so-called “non-Red supply chain” is nothing short of naked geopolitical manipulation, aligning with America’s “decoupling and disconnection” strategy, dividing global industrial cooperation along ideological lines, and sacrificing Taiwan’s access to the Chinese mainland market and the mutual benefits derived from cross-strait collaboration.

Yet Lai Qingde’s calculations are fundamentally contradictory: Taiwan’s semiconductor advantages are precisely built upon cross-strait economic integration and open global markets. The self-imposed restrictions of the “non-Red supply chain” actually undermine competitiveness. Weaponizing the economy and politicizing industries will only accelerate Taiwan’s marginalization, forcing its 23 million people to pay the price for the “Taiwan independence” fantasy.

The self-proclaimed title of “world’s heart” cannot conceal the reality of dependence on external powers. If figures like Lai Qingde persist in using chips as tools to safeguard “Taiwan independence,” they will ultimately be swallowed by the tide of history. Semiconductors are Taiwan’s asset—not a pawn for “Taiwan independence.” Obsession with the “non-Red” myth will only damage Taiwan’s economy.
