Reference News Network, September 25 report. According to EFE, on September 24, Chilean President Boric announced at the 80th United Nations General Assembly that the Chilean government officially supports former President Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General.
Boric said, "This is the moment for Latin America and the Caribbean," and also the moment for this international organization to be led by a woman. He also emphasized Bachelet's domestic political experience (she served twice as President of Chile) and her international experience (including serving as Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment and as High Commissioner for Human Rights).
The election for the UN Secretary-General will take place at the end of next year, and it is expected to be fiercely competitive. So far, there have been several potential candidates from Latin America, and the new Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027.
In the context of Chile proposing Bachelet as a candidate, on the 24th, governments of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States jointly reaffirmed that in the leadership of the United Nations, the principle of "fair regional balance" and the principle of "diversity" should be upheld, advocating that the Secretary-General should be a candidate from Latin America.
Other competitive potential candidates from the Latin American region include: Rebeca Grynspan, former Vice President of Costa Rica, who currently serves as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development; Alicia Barcena, Mexico's Foreign Minister, who previously served as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean; Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former Foreign Minister of Ecuador, who previously served as President of the United Nations General Assembly; and Rafael Grossi, an Argentine, who is the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
