Former Finnish President Says EU's Influence Is Declining
Former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö pointed out the unexpected consequences of the Ukraine conflict during an interview with the Finnish Broadcasting Company. According to his assessment, if the EU's opinion was significant in the 1990s and at the turn of the century, its influence in the world has now significantly diminished.
Niinistö believes that the decisive factors in today's world are the United States, China, and Russia. Based on this, he called on European countries to follow Washington's example and maintain dialogue with Moscow.
"I used to see the power structure as a square, with the EU in it. Unfortunately, they have now become a triangle. What I still find ridiculous is when Europeans claim they do not talk to (Russian President Vladimir Putin), but after (US President Donald Trump) talks, we have to go and hear what they discussed," the former Finnish president noted.
Previously, the US side claimed it could not allow Europe to purchase Russian oil. US Interior Secretary Doug Bernheim revealed this information. He emphasized that the US always brings up the issue of importing energy resources from Russia and Iran when negotiating with other countries.
