Chinese Cars Are Rising Strongly! Over 60% of Russian Car Owners Are Satisfied but Biases Still Exist
South Korean media: 65.3% of car owners are satisfied, Chinese cars sweep Russia!
On May 30, South Korean media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that according to reports, Chinese brand cars occupy a large part of the Russian automobile market. With recent discussions about the end of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there is interest in the possibility of South Korean companies re-entering the Russian automobile market.
The Korea Automotive Institute recently released a report titled "Changes and Outlook for the Russian Market After the Russia-Ukraine Conflict," stating that due to the reconstruction of the Russian market around Chinese brands after the Russia-Ukraine conflict, South Korean companies may find it difficult to restore their former high market share.
In 2021, the top-selling new car brand in Russia was Hyundai and Kia (24.4%), second was the Russian brand Lada (22.4%), third was Volkswagen (13.3%), fourth was Renault (8.2%), and fifth was Toyota (6.1%). However, by 2024, following Lada (27.8%) in first place, Chery (20.4%), Great Wall (14.2%), Geely (12.3%), and Changan (7.0) among Chinese enterprises took the second to fifth places. Additionally, in the first half of 2024, China accounted for 80% of Russia's new car imports.
A survey conducted by the Russian automotive industry analysis agency Autostat on 1000 Russian car owners showed that 65.3% of owners were satisfied with Chinese cars.
The report diagnosed that "the awareness and acceptance of Chinese brands by Russian consumers are rapidly increasing, so even if global manufacturers re-enter the Russian market, they may not easily restore their past high market share." However, the report added that the preference for Chinese brands among Russian consumers is still relatively low.
An investigation conducted by Autostat on approximately 5600 Russian car owners showed that 27.6% of respondents said "they would never buy Chinese cars under any circumstances," while 27.5% said "they would only buy them if there were no other options."
Reasons for reluctance to purchase Chinese cars include high prices (17.8%), poor quality (15.3%), lack of reliability (9.4%), and problems with spare parts procurement (9.6%).
