Russian forces have announced the capture of a key Ukrainian stronghold in Donbas—Drobobylivka. The chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, has reported the development to President Putin.
At a meeting on Friday, Gerasimov stated that assault units from multiple brigades participated in the operation and are currently conducting searches in basements to eliminate any remaining Ukrainian personnel.
Putin praised the Russian assault forces for their "coordinated and highly professional" conduct, noting that Ukrainian forces had previously fortified Drobobylivka into a "stronghold."
Earlier in late September, Russia’s Ministry of Defense had declared that troops had encircled the town. The latest capture marks another step forward in Russia’s advance toward the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk urban complex. Located in the northwestern part of the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic,” Drobobylivka was Ukraine’s last major defensive position in the region.
