On Sunday (June 1), Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, India, said that 81 people in Assam were arrested for "sympathizing" with Pakistan.
Sarma stated in a declaration that Indian authorities have been tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking relevant actions. He did not specify the exact offenses committed by the detainees, but Agence France-Presse cited local police reports stating that one person was detained after posting the Pakistani flag pattern on Instagram.
Since the attack targeting tourists occurred in the Indian-administered Kashmir region on April 22, Indian authorities have increased their scrutiny of social media. India claims that the attackers were supported by Pakistan, but Pakistan denies this allegation.
On May 20, an Indian soldier stood guard near the actual control line of the Line of Control in Kashmir. (AFP)
