It was reported that on the 15th local time, Lee Jae-myung posted an article on social platforms to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the publication of the "Joint Declaration of North and South Korea" (i.e., the "June 15 Joint Declaration"). He stated that he would stop destructive hostile actions, restart dialogues and cooperation.
Lee Jae-myung said that in June 2000, the then leaders of North and South Korea held a historically significant first inter-Korean summit meeting in Pyongyang and issued the "Joint Declaration of North and South Korea", "which broke through the barriers of half a century of confrontation and distrust, opening the starting point for a new era of reconciliation and cooperation. This brought peace to the Korean Peninsula and demonstrated the possibility of common prosperity between the North and South."
"Historical experience tells us that once peace is shaken, not only the economy and security, but even the daily lives of citizens will be threatened," Lee Jae-myung wrote. "'Peace is economy' is not an exaggeration."
He emphasized that we must turn the "Korean Peninsula risk" into the "Korean Peninsula advantage" and jointly create a future of mutual growth between the North and South. "I will do my best to open a new era of peace and prosperity for all people on the Korean Peninsula."
Lee Jae-myung proposed that in order to ease military tensions and create a peaceful atmosphere, "we will quickly restore the interrupted inter-Korean dialogue channels and reinstate the crisis management system."
