Reference News, July 31 - According to EFE, on July 30, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

Trudeau attributed this decision to a response to the "unbearable suffering" caused by Israeli actions. These actions include blocking the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza, violent acts by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, and plans to annex Palestinian territory.

Trudeau explained, "Canada has long been committed to the 'two-state solution': an independent, viable, sovereign Palestinian state coexisting with a peaceful and secure Israeli state. For decades, people have expected this outcome through a peaceful process."

He added during a press conference in Ottawa, "Unfortunately, this solution is no longer achievable."

The report states that Trudeau blamed the Israeli government for the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He said, "The suffering of the people of Gaza is unbearable and is rapidly worsening. The Israeli government has allowed the situation to deteriorate."

Trudeau stated that he had met with Palestinian Authority Chairman Abbas and conveyed Canada's decision, which is based on its hope to push forward "major reforms."

He also insisted that Hamas cannot participate in the 2026 elections and must "immediately" release all hostages taken after the attack on October 7, 2023.

Trudeau said he is working directly with countries such as Jordan to provide support for the Palestinian people in the coming days and will "strengthen" cooperation with other international partners "to develop a credible peace plan."

He explained, "The plan will establish governance and security mechanisms for the Palestinians and ensure necessary humanitarian aid reaches Gaza." (Translated by Han Chao)
