By Xinhua News Agency, Hefei, April 26th (reported by He Xi Yue) - The third China (Anhui) Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Transformation and Trading Conference opened on April 26th in Hefei, Anhui. The Low Temperature Science and Technology National Key Laboratory of the Institute of Physical Chemistry Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made its first release and exhibition of a ten-thousand-watt helium cryogenic machine. This ultra-large helium low-temperature refrigeration machine represents a major breakthrough for China in this field.

A ten-thousand-watt helium cryogenic machine refers to an ultra-large low-temperature refrigeration machine with a cooling capacity of more than 10,000 watts at liquid helium temperature (i.e., minus 269 degrees Celsius). It is a key core equipment for frontier research of large scientific devices such as accelerators and controllable nuclear fusion. The largest "artificial sun" international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) uses three helium cryogenic machines of this scale.

According to researcher Hu Zhongjun from the Institute of Physical Chemistry Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, all the core components of this ten-thousand-watt helium cryogenic machine, including the helium compressor, helium gas bearing turbine expander, and low-temperature heat exchanger, are domestically produced. Among them, the cold box is about 28 meters long and has a diameter exceeding 4 meters. In liquefaction mode, the liquefaction rate reaches 3,370 liters per hour. The core component, the turbine expander, operates at a speed of up to 100,000 to 150,000 revolutions per minute. This set of equipment will be applied to the national major science and technology infrastructure accelerator-driven transmutation research device. Another small-scale 500-watt helium cryogenic machine has been signed for the Hefei Advanced Light Source (HALF), which will play an important supporting role for the fourth-generation light source.

It was introduced that this technology not only has important applications in frontier basic research and life health fields but can also provide a liquid hydrogen technology solution to solve the challenging problem of large-scale clean energy storage and transportation, promoting the sustainable development of the new energy industry.
