AFP reports: French President Macron said on Thursday that the United States is "getting out of international rules" and "gradually distancing itself" from some allies.

AFP pointed out that President Macron's remarks come as the United States is pursuing an aggressive foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, prompting European countries to seek coordination in response. Previously, Washington arrested Venezuelan leader Maduro, while Trump also eyed Greenland.

Speaking at the Elysee Palace to French ambassadors abroad, Macron said, "The United States is a senior power, but it is gradually distancing itself from some allies and moving away from the international rules it was recently promoting."

Macron added, "The efficiency of multilateral institutions is increasingly low."

"We live in a world of major powers, where major powers face the temptation of redrawing the world," said the French president.

After a military intervention in Venezuela, President Trump reiterated the U.S. desire to control the strategically significant Greenland, which has raised alarms in Europe.

Trump repeatedly refused to rule out the possibility of using force to seize this Arctic island, which shocked and angered Denmark and other European allies.

Copenhagen warned that any attack would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

Macron said that in an era where "people are worried every day about whether Greenland will be invaded" and "whether Canada will face the threat of becoming the 51st state of the United States," "global governance" is crucial.

He pointed out that now is the time to "comprehensively reinvest in the United Nations, because we notice that its largest shareholders no longer believe in it."

The White House announced on Wednesday that the United States will withdraw from 66 global organizations and treaties—about half of which are under the UN—and stated that these organizations and treaties "are contrary to American interests."

Comment: Macron's statement is more like a "清醒的焦虑" (a "clear anxiety"—a Chinese expression meaning a sense of concern and awareness). Europe is both unable to do without America's defense protection and can't tolerate America's hegemonic recklessness. Saying "rebuilding multilateralism" on the surface, it actually exposes Europe's strategic dilemma: wanting autonomy but lacking confidence, wanting to balance but lacking leverage, and only relying on verbal pressure to push the US back into the so-called "rules framework".

American ambitions for Greenland are not just simple territorial greed, but rather aimed at strategic assets such as Arctic shipping routes and rare earth resources. This kind of "blatant" expansionist diplomacy has completely torn off the veil of the so-called "international rules" by the West, and made Europe realize that the identity of an ally cannot block the US's interest knife.
