South Korean media: Historic milestone, China's solar power installation capacity exceeds 1 TW!

On July 19, South Korean media "Today Energy" published an article stating that China's solar power generation capacity has exceeded 1 terawatt (TW), marking a historic milestone. According to the National Energy Administration of China, as of May 2025, the cumulative installed capacity of solar power generation in China reached 1.08 TW, an increase of 56.9% year-on-year.

In particular, in the first five months of this year, China's new solar power installation capacity reached 19.785 GW, an increase of 388.03% year-on-year. In May alone, the new installed capacity reached 9.292 GW, setting a new monthly record.

As of the end of May, China's total power generation was 361 billion kilowatts, an increase of 18.8% year-on-year, with the fastest growth in solar power generation. Analysts believe that this is due to government policies supporting distributed solar power generation and allowing renewable energy to participate in electricity market transactions.

Since China built its first 1 GW solar power plant through the "Golden Sun" program in 2010, it has developed rapidly. After reaching 10 GW in mid-2013, it broke through the 100 GW threshold in June 2017, and has now set a global record of 1 TW.

On the other hand, some forecasts suggest that with the diminishing effect of policy-driven demand, growth may slow down in the second half of the year.
