The EU Reduces Dependence on China: Formulating a New Supply Strategy for Rare Earth Metals and Strategic Materials
Kazakhstan International News Agency - According to a report by Germany's Bild, the European Commission is developing a new strategy aimed at reducing the EU's reliance on China and ensuring the import supply of rare earth metals and other strategic materials.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated at a meeting in Berlin that the goal of this strategy is to provide short-term and long-term alternative sources of raw materials for European industry and ensure supply chain security. The new strategy draws on the model used by the EU in successfully responding to the energy crisis after the interruption of Russian energy supplies.
One of the focuses of the strategy is to promote the development of the recycling industry. Von der Leyen said, "Some companies have already achieved a recycling rate of up to 95% for rare earth elements and batteries."
Additionally, Brussels plans to sign agreements with several countries, including Ukraine, Canada, Australia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Chile, and Greenland, regarding the mining and supply of raw materials.
