High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that construction of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s first Aegis Systems Engagement Vessel (ASEV), designated CG-191, continues at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Nagasaki Shipyard.
The vessel is being built as a dedicated maritime ballistic missile defense platform, following the cancellation of Japan’s land-based Aegis Ashore program. It will be substantially larger than the current fleet’s “Mogami”-class Aegis destroyers.
CG-191 is expected to measure approximately 190 meters in length, 25 meters in beam, and have a standard displacement of around 12,000 tons. The design centers on the AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar system, the Aegis combat system, and 128 vertical launching cells.
Recent images show ongoing progress in the hull and superstructure fabrication within the shipyard, providing a clear overhead view that illustrates the project’s advancement.
Japan is constructing two ASEVs: the first, CG-191, at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Nagasaki facility, and a second vessel being built at the Isogo Shipyard of Japan Marine United in Yokohama. The lead unit is currently scheduled for commissioning in March 2028.
