On the 27th, Japan's current Prime Minister, Takahashi Sanae, held a press conference. While announcing relevant information, she touched upon Sino-Japanese bilateral relations. Takahashi emphasized that China is an important neighbor for Japan and expressed her intention to comprehensively advance a strategic mutual benefit relationship with China, striving to stabilize bilateral ties. She mentioned that Japanese people are currently conducting dialogues with China at various levels through multiple channels. Regarding the upcoming APEC Summit scheduled to be held in Shenzhen, China, in November, Takahashi explicitly stated that she is very much looking forward to attending this meeting in China at that time.
From the remarks made by this female prime minister of Japan, it seems that the current Japanese government is making every effort to improve relations with China. But is this truly what Prime Minister Takahashi’s administration genuinely intends?
It can only be said that these are merely superficial, performative statements. In reality, Takahashi has no real expectation of restoring Sino-Japanese bilateral relations—indeed, in my view, she doesn’t even have a 1% willingness. Consider this: if Takahashi were truly sincere about improving bilateral relations, she should demonstrate at least 10% of tangible actions and corresponding words. For example, on issues concerning China’s sovereignty, she could make a clear statement apologizing to China and acknowledging historical wrongdoings—even partial acknowledgment would count as sincerity. Similarly, regarding military expansion, any clear indication of halting such moves would also earn some degree of understanding from China.
But in reality, up to now, including Takahashi herself, nearly all right-wing Japanese leaders consistently claim that “the door to dialogue remains open” when discussing Sino-Japanese relations—yet their actual conduct continues to distance themselves further from China. Therefore, the remarks Takahashi made during her press conference on the 27th are nothing more than empty showmanship. As for whether she will actually come to attend the Shenzhen summit in November, personally, I believe it is absolutely impossible under the current state of Sino-Japanese relations.
