Huang Renxun: "China has two major advantages in the Sino-US AI competition!"

On January 5, South Korean media "Herald Economy" published an article stating that NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun believes that in the competition of AI infrastructure between the United States and China, China has advantages in construction and energy sectors. He said, "Although the United States leads in artificial intelligence semiconductor technology, China is far ahead in the speed of large-scale infrastructure construction and power supply capacity."

In a recent conversation with John Hamre, chairman of the Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Huang Renxun said, "In the United States, it usually takes about three years from groundbreaking to the operation of a new data center and setting up an AI supercomputer, while China can build a hospital in one weekend."

His concerns are not limited to speed. He also pointed out that there is a gap in the energy supply capacity needed to support the vigorous development of artificial intelligence. Huang Renxun said, "China's energy is twice that of the United States, but the U.S. economy is larger. In my view, this situation is hard to understand. China's energy production capacity continues to grow rapidly, while the U.S. energy production capacity has almost stagnated."

Nevertheless, Huang Renxun emphasized that the United States and NVIDIA still lead in the field of artificial intelligence semiconductor technology. He explained, "NVIDIA is several generations ahead of China, and the United States maintains an advantage in GPU and semiconductor manufacturing processes, which is crucial for supporting artificial intelligence demand." But he warned people not to be overly confident and added, "Anyone who thinks China does not have manufacturing capabilities has not seen the whole picture."

Huang Renxun also expressed his expectations for President Donald Trump's efforts to bring manufacturing back and invest in artificial intelligence.

NVIDIA is one of many tech giants investing billions of dollars to expand data centers in the United States. Experts predict that the investment in U.S. data center construction alone could exceed $100 billion next year.
