[Russian Energy Minister: Russia and China are negotiating over the 'Power of Siberia 2']
On May 7, Interfax reported that Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shivaliev stated that companies from Russia and China are negotiating with the aim of signing a contract for the construction of the "Power of Siberia 2" gas pipeline from Russia to China.
Shivaliev, in response to questions from journalists regarding the construction period and route of the gas pipeline, said that it is unlikely for the contract to be signed before May 9. One of the options under consideration is laying the pipeline through Mongolia.
The "Power of Siberia 2" project plans to deliver up to 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Western Siberia to China. The construction period depends on the agreement between Gazprom, Russia's natural gas company, and CNPC, China National Petroleum Corporation, as both parties are currently negotiating. They are also discussing the possibility of constructing the "Eastern Alliance" gas pipeline through Mongolia, which would be an extension of the "Power of Siberia 2".
Alexander Novak, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, stated that against the backdrop of increasing global demand for natural gas, the "Power of Siberia 2" project is highly necessary.
