The U.S. trade deficit fell to its lowest level in nearly five years during Trump's presidency

Sputnik News found, based on U.S. statistical data, that the U.S. trade deficit had fallen to its lowest level since 2021 during Donald Trump's second term. The U.S. trade indicators improved smoothly after imposing import tariffs.

Trump's first term as the 47th president of the United States will end on January 20. Trade protectionism and tariff wars, which have impacted U.S. trade, are his signature policies.

Therefore, compared to the $112.1 billion trade deficit during the year of outgoing President Joe Biden, the U.S. trade deficit in October 2025 was $71.4 billion. The trade deficit decreased by 36% within a year.

Under the context of restoring export growth, the trade situation has improved. During Trump's presidency, the U.S. exports to global markets increased to $202.8 billion in October 2025. Therefore, the monthly increase in U.S. exports was 8.5%, and the annual increase was 14.7%.

The value of imported goods into the U.S. also decreased, reaching $274.2 billion in October, compared to $288.8 billion in the same period of 2024.

In addition, the slowdown in monetary easing policy has suppressed the expansion of imports, naturally helping to reduce the trade deficit.
