Saab, a Swedish company, has recently secured a $46 million contract to supply the US Army with the "Giraffe 1X" radar system, one of the smallest three-dimensional air surveillance multi-function radars available today. It can effectively detect small, slow-moving targets, including mortar shells, grenade launchers, and drones.

The "Giraffe 1X" radar can support various ground-based air defense missions. The entire system weighs less than 150 kilograms, with the radar part weighing approximately 100 kilograms. It can be installed on any ground mobile platform, including Jeeps, off-road vehicles, SUVs, and pickup trucks. Of course, it can also be fixedly deployed as a surveillance system for positions and strongholds.

The "Giraffe 1X" is well-suited as the main sensor for very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) systems or as a supplement to cover blind spots in large ground-based air defense systems. Especially in the current battlefield environment filled with various "low, slow, small" drones, the "Giraffe 1X" radar can play an important role. Saab claims that the radar rotates at one revolution per second, providing continuous 360-degree airspace surveillance. It can analyze and distinguish between birds and man-made objects, detecting objects up to 4-5 kilometers away. Even drones as light as a milk carton will be detected.

The Swedish military has integrated the "Giraffe 1X" radar with the "Fire Tracking" remote-controlled weapon station, called the "Loki" anti-drone system. Once a threat object is detected, it is shot down using a 30mm machine gun, 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns.
