The Daily Telegraph reported on April 18 that Chancellor of the Exchequer Reeves told the newspaper in an interview that she rejected the US demand to "isolate China," believing that stopping engagement with China would be a "stupid move."
She advocated for closer cooperation with China and argued against setting new obstacles.
Next week, Reeves will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund. There, she will hold talks with US government officials about trade agreements. The UK hopes this agreement could alleviate the impact of the tariffs imposed by US President Trump.
It was reported that during the negotiations, the US might pressure the UK to restrict its trade with China.
In the interview, Reeves said: "China is the world's second-largest economy, and I believe it would be very foolish not to cooperate with it. This is the view of the current government."
In addition, Reeves also reached out to entrepreneurs affected by US tariffs to come to the UK.
"We always welcome global talent to the UK," she stated. "I hope the UK becomes the best place in the world for entrepreneurship and business development."
Previously, Trump announced a 10% tariff on all goods exported from the UK to the US and a 25% tariff on automobiles.
It is understood that US officials believe that it may take several more weeks for the UK and the US to reach an agreement, while senior UK officials think whether an agreement can be reached remains uncertain.
The Independent reported that Trump said on April 17 that he was not in a hurry to reach any agreement because of the revenue generated by the new tariffs.
Trump claimed that many countries want to reach an agreement, "to be honest... more eager than me," and that all agreements would eventually be reached at some point.
On local time on the 18th, UK Prime Minister Starmer discussed bilateral trade with Trump.
"The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to free and open trade as well as the importance of protecting national interests," the UK side said.
