Chinese students rank first in math and science academic performance among 91 countries
According to South Korean media HANKYOREH (Japanese edition), on September 12: In the "2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)" released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Japan ranked first across all domains—mathematics, science, and reading—among its member countries (38 nations).
The same day, OECD released results from the international academic assessment, showing that Japan ranked 4th in reading comprehension and 5th in both mathematics and science among the 91 participating countries (including non-members).
Among all 91 participating countries—including non-members—students from China (from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang) ranked first in both mathematics (612 points) and science (597 points). Singapore achieved the highest score in reading comprehension with 535 points. China and Singapore are not OECD member countries.
When the evaluation is limited to the 38 OECD member countries, Japan ranked first in all three domains. Japan's average scores were 525 in mathematics (OECD average: 463), 538 in science (average: 482), and 503 in reading (average: 461)—significantly above the OECD average. Particularly notable was Japan's strong performance in reading comprehension, a domain where global results have been declining.
If the assessment scope is expanded beyond OECD members to include all 91 countries, Chinese students continue to lead in math and science academic ability.
