Han media: China's AI papers and patent applications exceed the United States, ranking first globally!

On August 22, South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that a report shows China is leading in the number of AI-related papers and patents. The report explains that China not only leads in the number of AI-related papers published, but also leads in patent applications and technological capabilities.

Recently, the paper database platform "Dimensions" released a report analyzing the number of AI-related papers.

The report shows that the number of AI-related papers has increased from less than 8,500 in 2000 to more than 57,000 in 2024. The number of AI-related papers published by Chinese researchers was only 671 in 2000, but increased to 23,695 in 2024. This means that about half of the AI-related papers were published in China. As of 2024, the number of AI-related papers in the United States was 6,378, in the United Kingdom 2,747, and in the European Union 1,055.

The report states that China's dominance is weakening the influence of the United States in the field of AI research, and countries that can control AI will have competitive advantages in various fields.

Daniel Hook, CEO of Digital Science, the parent company of Dimensions, said that given the great success of Chinese AI company DeepSeek, it is difficult to accept the view that the United States leads China by 10 years in the AI field. DeepSeek's large language model DeepSeek-V3, released in December last year, has performance comparable to similar models developed in the United States, but at a much lower development cost.

The report shows that the AI papers published in China are generating record numbers of patent applications. In 2024, Chinese researchers applied for 35,423 AI-related patents, which is 13 times the total number of AI-related patent applications from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, which was 2,678.

China has confirmed its independent AI research capabilities. The report says that countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union often collaborate to publish papers, but China's frequency of international cooperation is relatively low. Hook said, "China's AI research is reducing its reliance on other countries."

The report also noted that Chinese AI researchers are young. Hook said, "China has a young, dynamic, well-educated workforce with broad knowledge of AI, and we look forward to seeing continuous innovation waves like DeepSeek."
