UK media: Trump has his eyes on Canada's natural resources
Natural resources are another source of dispute. Canada possesses abundant rare earth metals, gold, oil, coal, and timber, all of which are natural wealth that Trump has long cherished.
Despite Trump's denial of any desire for Canada's timber, energy reserves, or finished products, it was reported that Trudeau expressed a different view at a closed-door meeting with Canadian business and labor leaders in February.
"I think the Trump administration not only knows how much critical minerals we have, but this may also be the reason they keep talking about annexing us and making us the 51st state. They are very aware of our resources and would very much like to benefit from them," CBC quoted Trudeau as saying.
Canadian journalist and host of the "The Big Story" podcast, Jordan Heath-Ross, believes that Trump wants Canada's resources and should be taken seriously when it comes to his talk of annexation.
"He likes being the one who brings vast tracts of land," Heath-Ross said, "he might want the Arctic, which will undoubtedly become more valuable in the coming years."
To Trump, even the US-Canada border itself is questionable. "If you look at the map, you'll find they've artificially drawn a line between Canada and the United States," he said in March, "this was done a long time ago and makes no sense."
Needless to say, Trump's remarks infuriated Canadian leaders, who warned him that he ultimately has designs on their country.
In March this year, Trudeau accused the U.S. president of planning to "completely destroy Canada's economy so they can more easily annex us."
Last month, after Trump first announced new tariffs on Canada, Trudeau stated: "Trump thinks that one of the simplest ways is to annex our country. This is a real thing."
