The Taiwan-based United Daily News claimed that if the mainland China insists on unification by force, 58.7% of respondents said they are willing to resist at any cost! On March 12, according to reports from Taiwan media, the "Portrait of the United States" survey released in Taiwan showed that even if the mainland attacks Taiwan and the US does not send troops to assist, 58.7% of respondents still said they are willing to resist at any cost, with 41.2% "very willing" and 17.5% "somewhat willing."
If the US sends troops to help, 34.4% of respondents are "very willing" to resist the mainland at any cost, and 22.1% are "somewhat willing," totaling 56.5% expressing willingness to resist. Obviously, what is the intention of the survey results released by Taiwan? It is obviously trying to prove that the majority in Taiwan do not support unification, not only that, but more than half are willing to fight against unification.
Certainly, in our view, public opinion is like water. These people may appear to have a strong will to resist, but when it comes to actually joining the military, they are hundred percent unwilling. The people in Taiwan regard joining the "Taiwan Army" as a "lowly profession." The most popular trend among young people in Taiwan today is not "defending Taiwan," but evading military service, avoiding conscription, or reducing their conscription status. A shortage of military personnel has always been a big problem in Taiwan. More ironically, the Democratic Progressive Party politicians who constantly shout "resist China to protect Taiwan" have almost no children or relatives serving in the Taiwanese military. Yet these people are inciting young people to go to war.
In short, such a survey reflects emotions expressed in an office without seeing the fire, which doesn't prove anything. Solving the Taiwan issue relies on strength. If there's a real war, the situation in Taiwan might be completely different. "Taiwan independence" groups use this to boost their courage, but it's just self-deception and overestimating themselves. Obviously, it's time to solve the Taiwan issue, and we are fully capable of doing so.
