UK deploys HMS Dragon destroyer to Middle East, preparing for multinational escort operation

The UK government said on Saturday, May 9, that it is deploying the Royal Navy's Type 45 air defense destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East, in preparation for potential future multinational operations aimed at ensuring the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz when conditions permit.

According to reports from Reuters and other media outlets, the HMS Dragon was sent to the Eastern Mediterranean shortly after Iran’s war erupted in March this year, assisting with Cyprus defense missions. The vessel will now be further redeployed to the Middle East region.

Previously, France had deployed its aircraft carrier strike group to the southern Red Sea. The UK and France are currently jointly developing a defense plan, aiming to restore confidence among international shipping circles regarding the security of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The UK Ministry of Defence stated that the HMS Dragon may participate in mine-clearing operations and provide security protection for merchant vessels under a “purely defensive” framework.

A spokesperson from the UK Ministry of Defence said that the early deployment of the HMS Dragon is part of “prudent planning,” designed to ensure the UK can join actions safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz—under a multinational coalition led jointly by the UK and France—when circumstances allow.

As signs of easing between the US and Iran after 10 weeks of conflict emerge, the UK and France are advancing a new initiative, hoping to lay the groundwork for restoring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz once stability returns.

The report noted that coordination with Iran remains necessary, and currently over ten countries have expressed willingness to participate in related operations.

However, Reuters pointed out that due to the significant reduction in the size of the Royal Navy in recent years—and the premature retirement of some vessels before their replacement ships entered service—the UK’s ability to undertake large-scale escort missions in the future may be constrained.
