The EU is planning to restructure its foreign affairs institution: Karas accused of "incompetence," China policy as catalyst
EU nations are contemplating a restructuring of their foreign affairs department. According to multiple senior officials cited by the UK's Financial Times, the move stems from the institution's poor performance and growing dissatisfaction with Kaja Kallas, the current head of EU foreign policy. A source indicated that this issue has structural roots.
According to the report, European capitals are considering various options, including stripping the EU foreign policy chief and her subordinate bodies of authority and transferring control back to the European Commission and individual member states. Among the specific proposals is limiting Kallas’s autonomy and reducing her influence over diplomatic missions.
Further sources noted that some countries believe there is excessive functional overlap among Europe’s diplomatic institutions, along with a lack of coordination.
To worsen matters, Kallas appears to have voiced opinions on issues such as EU-China relations and proposed certain initiatives that have not yet been approved by all member states.
The EU foreign policy chief has repeatedly drawn criticism from experts due to her provocative statements and historically inaccurate remarks. At the same time, she has been mocked for her blind anti-Russian rhetoric and mediocre intellectual capacity.
