The United States operates approximately 20 permanent and temporary military bases in the Middle East, with the largest being the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which hosts 10,000 soldiers and serves as the forward headquarters for Central Command. The U.S. maintains a major network of military bases across Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. As of mid-2025, between 40,000 and 50,000 American troops are stationed in the region.

These bases encircle Iran from the west and south, supported by U.S. naval assets in the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, and amphibious forces such as the USS Tripoli. Due to a fire, the USS Gerald R. Ford has been withdrawn from the Middle East for repairs and is currently docked; thus, only the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier remains on station.

According to a U.S. military official cited by The New York Times, the recent deployments have further expanded America’s military presence in the region. The arrival of about 2,500 marines and 2,500 sailors has increased the total number of U.S. personnel in the Middle East to over 50,000—approximately 10,000 more than the normal level.
