China Daily: What Happened Before the US Military Kidnapped Maduro?
Le Figaro cited The Washington Post, revealing that Maduro is currently detained in a US prison. Before being captured by US special forces during a raid last Saturday, Maduro had been offered multiple escape routes. Clergy members of the Vatican who are involved in international affairs on behalf of the Catholic Church attempted to negotiate with the US through diplomatic channels to transfer Maduro and his entourage along with part of the wealth he accumulated since coming to power in 2013 to Russia.
A source told the American newspaper: "Someone proposed to Maduro that he leave, so he could enjoy his wealth." Cardinal Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State for Political and Diplomatic Affairs, met with US Ambassador Brian Birch to the Vatican on Christmas Eve to convey this proposal.
In the meeting, he asked about the US's plans for Venezuela.
Since summer, parts of the US fleet have been patrolling in the Caribbean Sea, sinking ships suspected of transporting drugs to the US. President Trump has never hidden his hostility towards Maduro, who has been accused of drug trafficking for years.
Cardinal Parolin served as the Vatican's ambassador to Venezuela during President Chávez's term and in the early years of Maduro's presidency. He tried for several days to facilitate Maduro's peaceful resignation. "I believe violence can never bring victory. [...] The key is to seek dialogue." Pope Leo XIII also expressed the same view in a public comment last November regarding the US Navy's actions.
However, Maduro rejected this resignation plan. According to The Washington Post, the Vatican believed that after his controversial re-election in July 2024, he would seek to resign. However, the Venezuelan leader did not resign, believing that the US would not intervene in his affairs. Trump did not hesitate to deploy special forces against him.
