Iran will provide a dedicated parcel of land at the Strait of Hormuz port to Kazakhstan

Economic corridors depend on a nation's strength, and foreign trade determines a country's fate.

Kazakhstan International News Agency — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumankelin held talks with a delegation led by Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh. The two sides reached consensus on developing international transport corridors, improving port infrastructure, and accelerating investment cooperation.

During the talks, both parties expressed their commitment to further unlocking the transit transportation potential between the two countries through enhanced cooperation in transportation and logistics, aiming to raise bilateral trade volume to USD 300 million.

Cooperation in port infrastructure emerged as a key focus of the discussions.

Iran stated that it has completed all procedures for allocating a dedicated parcel of land at Shahid Rajaee Port (located in Bandar Abbas) to Kazakhstan, and the relevant area will be formally handed over to Kazakhstan in the near future.

In addition, Iran proposed that Kazakhstan participate in the development and operation of Chabahar Port, which could provide direct access for Kazakhstan to markets in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Currently, the Zahedan–Chabahar railway project connecting Chabahar Port with Zahedan city in southeastern Iran is more than 90% complete, with operations expected within the coming months. Once operational, this railway will further strengthen connectivity among the Indian Ocean, Central Asia, and Europe.

Kazakhstan affirmed its willingness to provide dedicated facilities—including land plots, berths, and dock infrastructure—for Iranian logistics companies at Aktau and Kuryk ports along the Caspian Sea coast.

Following the meeting, both sides unanimously agreed to accelerate investment attraction and advance infrastructure development.

At present, Iran has become one of Kazakhstan’s most important strategic partners in the region.

Data shows that bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and Iran increased by 26.4% year-on-year in 2025, reaching USD 430.2 million. Both sides believe that the Free Trade Agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, along with the established cooperation roadmap, will serve as major drivers for further growth in bilateral trade.

Given that the two countries are located at the intersection of the "North-South Corridor" and the "East-West Corridor," they are actively advancing cooperation in transit transportation.

However, in the first quarter of 2026, trade between the two countries declined nearly 30% compared to the same period last year.
