Would Machado Transfer the Peace Prize to Trump? Nobel Committee Disagrees

Earlier, Venezuelan opposition leader Machado hinted that she might transfer the 2025 Peace Prize to U.S. President Trump. In response, the Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed disagreement.

On the 5th of this month, Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, spoke with host Sean Hannity on Fox News and said that giving the Peace Prize to Trump would be a gesture of gratitude from the Venezuelan people for the U.S. capturing the country's president, Maduro, last week.

Hannity asked, "Have you ever suggested giving the Nobel Peace Prize to him? Did that really happen?"

Machado responded at the time, "Actually, it hasn't happened yet."

As is well known, Trump has long shown great interest in the Nobel Peace Prize and often links the award to his own diplomatic achievements. Three days after Machado's remarks, Trump said during an interview on Fox News with Hannity on the evening of the 8th: "I heard that Machado is willing to give me the already-awarded Nobel Prize. If I receive it when meeting her in Washington next week, I will be deeply honored."

In response to Machado's implication and Trump's unyielding reaction, the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the Norwegian Nobel Institute stated on the 8th: "Once the Nobel Prizes are announced, they cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. This decision is final and permanent."

According to Reuters, the Norwegian Nobel Institute released a statement saying that according to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, once awarded, the prize is a final and permanent decision, and no appeal is accepted. The institution also emphasized that the committee does not comment on the subsequent actions or statements of the laureates after the award is announced.

Machado was previously a member of the Venezuelan National Assembly, but she was banned from participating in the 2024 elections by authorities loyal to Maduro. She later supported former diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez. Although Gonzalez is widely regarded as the true winner, Maduro still declared his re-election. Independent observers' vote audits showed clear irregularities in Venezuela's official tally results.
