French media: EU Chamber of Commerce in China: China is pushing Europe to take more stringent trade measures against China

The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China stated in a report released on the 10th that, due to the huge trade surplus of China with the EU, Europe has no choice but to take more "aggressive" measures.

According to data released by the General Administration of Customs of China on the 8th, despite the ongoing tariff war pushed by US President Trump, China's total trade surplus for the first 11 months of this year exceeded one trillion US dollars, setting a historical record.

However, such achievements in China's exports have made Europe increasingly uneasy, as a large part of China's trade surplus comes from its exports to EU countries. The EU's trade deficit with China exceeded 350 billion US dollars in the past year. The EU Chamber of Commerce in China pointed out in its report on the 10th that China continues to export more and more goods to the EU market.

Jens Eskelund, chairman of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China, told the media recently that China's restrictions on rare earth exports have already been a warning bell for Europe. He said that Europe cannot only be satisfied with expressing a stance that it will not unintentionally become a collateral victim of an unrelated conflict. In his view, this is no longer just a trade dispute, but has now touched upon European security.

Since the Trump administration took office, it has launched a comprehensive trade war, which has placed the European Union under pressure from the United States, as well as the pressure of China quickly adjusting its export destinations to avoid American tariffs, shifting a large number of goods to Europe. However, the EU has repeatedly expressed concerns to the Chinese authorities, hoping that China would promote balanced bilateral trade, but these efforts have not yielded results.

At the beginning of this month, French President Macron made his fourth state visit to China, once again calling for balance in China-EU trade. He also issued a threat: if China does not take measures, it will face stronger actions from the EU.
