German Foreign Minister: China Has Given Assurances on Rare Earths
Economic issues were also a key topic of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock's visit, particularly China's restrictions on rare earth exports. Rare earths are essential materials for many industries, including automotive, electronics, and defense. On Monday, Baerbock also met with the Chinese Minister of Commerce in Beijing.
According to a press release from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Chinese minister stated that China values Germany's concerns regarding export controls and the Amphenol Semiconductor issue, and "has gradually implemented a general licensing system in areas such as rare earths, and has taken measures to exempt related chip exports from Amphenol Semiconductor."
According to AFP, Baerbock said that Chinese officials had assured him that Beijing had taken a "constructive" approach in issuing rare earth export licenses to German companies. He said, "I believe this is a positive commitment, and now I encourage German businesses to continue pursuing their applications."
