Our reporter Cao Jiwei from Xining, June 17th, recently, the joint experimental team led by the Zijin Mountain Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made a major breakthrough in the field of terahertz communication, marking that the terahertz communication technology has been successfully verified, providing a new idea and practical example for the development of high-capacity communication technology in our country. The relevant results have been published online in "National Science Review".

Since October 2024, the research team of the Zijin Mountain Astronomical Observatory has conducted experiments near the sub-millimeter wave astronomical observatory site at Snow Mountain Pasture in Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province (altitude 4445 meters). The team successfully achieved real-time wireless transmission of high-definition video over a distance of 1.2 kilometers by using a fully self-developed 60-centimeter aperture terahertz astronomical telescope system equipped with a 500 gigahertz frequency band and a superconducting mixer receiver with quantum-limit sensitivity, as well as a fully electronic terahertz signal transmitter with an output power of only 15 microwatts. This achievement is the first time internationally to apply the terahertz astronomical telescope system to the field of terahertz communication, verifying the huge potential of using terahertz astronomical telescopes at Snow Mountain Pasture for high-capacity satellite-ground communication.
