Nikkei News Celebrates: Chinese Tourists' Bookings to Japan Still Increased by 60% During the Spring Festival!
According to a survey by Japanese hotel technology company Tripla on 1,727 Japanese hotels, during the 2026 Spring Festival holiday (February 15 to 23), the accommodation bookings from China increased by 57% compared to the same period in 2025 (January 28 to February 4), approaching 60%.
Tripla's research shows that during the 2026 Spring Festival, the average room rate for Chinese tourists in hotels across Japan reached 22,000 yen, an increase of 21% year-on-year. Moreover, nearly half of the surveyed hotels actively raised their prices.
It seems that Chinese tourists are not only coming to Japan in greater numbers but also willing to pay higher prices.
After Kaichi Hayato realized she had messed up the relationship between the two sides, Japan significantly improved the efficiency of short-term tourist visa approvals for Chinese tourists, and some cities even piloted simplified procedures. Combined with the RMB to JPY exchange rate remaining in a relatively favorable range, this has kept the actual cost of traveling to Japan from rising significantly.
Dog Brother thinks that at this time, airlines should continue to reduce flights and increase ticket prices by more than double. It's better to make money without any effort. The country could enforce a requirement that during the Spring Festival, flight frequencies be reduced by half again from the current level, regardless of domestic or foreign airlines.
Since they are all high-net-worth individuals, if they keep flocking to Japan in such circumstances, just raise the price to match their status.
