U.S. Department of Commerce: "Huawei is unlikely to produce more than 200,000 AI chips this year!"

On June 15th, South Korean media Edaily reported that the U.S. Department of Commerce predicted that Huawei's artificial intelligence (AI) chip "Ascend" production this year will not exceed 200,000 units.

According to Reuters, Jeffrey Kessler, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce responsible for industry and security, stated at a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee that Huawei's Ascend chip production capacity this year is expected to reach up to 200,000 units, most or all of which will be supplied to Chinese companies.

Kessler emphasized, "We should not take this number lightly. China is investing heavily to increase AI chip production and improve the performance of its manufactured chips. It is important that we understand this and do not have unrealistic feelings of security; China is catching up rapidly."

David Sacks, who was responsible for AI and encryption policies during the Trump administration, previously assessed that the gap between the U.S. and China in the AI race may only be a few months. Sacks said at the AWS Summit held in Washington D.C. that China's AI technology is lagging behind the U.S. by only 3 to 6 months. The White House then clarified that he was referring to China's AI models and added that China's AI chip technology lags behind by 1 to 2 years.

In an interview, Ren Zhengfei, chairman of Huawei, revealed, "Huawei's chips are one generation behind our American competitors, but we invest over $25 billion annually to improve performance."
