Media: US Chamber of Commerce may sue Trump administration over tariffs
According to sources familiar with the matter, quoted by Fortune magazine, the US Chamber of Commerce is considering suing President Trump's administration in order to prevent new import tariffs from taking effect.
On April 2, the US President signed an executive order imposing "reciprocal tariffs" on goods imported from other countries, with a minimum benchmark rate of 10%, and a 20% tariff on goods from the EU. The US President promised that the new tariffs would generate $6-7 trillion in budget revenue.
The publication wrote: "The largest lobbying force in American business (the US Chamber of Commerce - Editor's note) is considering suing the Trump administration to prevent the implementation of the President's new tariffs, which are set to take effect on Wednesday."
The magazine noted that the US Chamber of Commerce may claim that President Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs is illegal.
According to the publication, some of the organization's largest members are calling for litigation. Sources also said that other organizations may join the Chamber of Commerce's lawsuit.
