The preliminary data from the German Federal Statistics Office shows that China has once again surpassed the United States, becoming Germany's largest trading partner in the first eight months of 2025. During this period, the trade volume between China and Germany reached 163.4 billion euros (about 191 billion US dollars), slightly higher than the 162.8 billion euros between Germany and the United States. Previously, the United States had overtaken China in 2024, but with the Trump administration re-imposing high tariffs, Germany's exports to the US have clearly suffered. In the first eight months of this year, Germany's exports to the US fell by 7.4% compared to the same period last year, reaching only 99.6 billion euros, and in August alone, it fell sharply by 23.5% year-on-year. Jandura, chairman of the German Foreign Trade Association, pointed out that the US tariff and trade policies are the main reasons for the decline in sales, with a significant drop in demand for German cars, machinery, and chemical products in the US. At the same time, Germany's exports to China fell by 13.5%, but imports from China increased by 8.3%, reaching 108.8 billion euros.
