Fourth time! Report says Trump will again extend the implementation period of the "Sell or Ban" bill for TikTok

On the evening of September 14 local time, Reuters cited sources with knowledge of the matter, reporting that the Trump administration is expected to again extend the deadline for ByteDance to divest its TikTok U.S. operations. Previously, the U.S. government had required ByteDance to complete the divestiture by September 17 this year, otherwise it would ban its business in the United States.

If the report is true, this will be the fourth time that President Trump has given TikTok a "grace period". Last month, Trump said he had already found an American buyer for the application and may further extend the deadline.

According to the original provisions of the U.S. "Sell or Ban" law, ByteDance must sell its TikTok U.S. operations by January 19, 2025, but Trump has extended the deadline three times. The last one was on June 19, when Trump signed an executive order for the third time, postponing the implementation period by 90 days to September 17.

As of the time of writing, the White House has not responded. Reuters pointed out that if TikTok again receives a grace period, it would indicate that the U.S. government is unwilling to shut down an application with 170 million users in the United States.
