Aluminium Bahrain BSC has initiated a phased shutdown at the world's largest single-site aluminum smelter, exacerbating the situation of disrupted industries and rising prices due to the war in the Middle East. Aluminium Bahrain stated that it has shut down three production lines, accounting for 19% of its annual capacity of 1.6 million tons. The company said that the shutdown allows it to preserve raw material inventories and maintain normal operations in other parts of the factory in the event of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar has also been forced to suspend part of its aluminum production due to a natural gas shortage. Hindalco Industries Ltd. recently informed its customers that it would suspend sales of extruded aluminum products due to a disruption in natural gas supply. The price of aluminum on the London Metal Exchange has risen to its highest level since 2022.
