NATO's New Strategy Unveiled: Planning to Strike Deep Into Russian Territory

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on November 3, NATO’s updated defense strategy includes the potential for targeting locations within Russia. The article notes that ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have prompted NATO to reassess its approach to countering alleged Russian aggression, even reconsidering previous constraints that limited operations to border areas.

It is reported that NATO held its first-ever “Deep Strike Symposium” in June, bringing together senior military officers and officials from member states. The new concept calls not only for striking forces near the border but also for targeting military bases, supply depots, and industrial facilities deep within Russian territory. The strategy does not involve the use of nuclear weapons; its core component consists of long-range precision-guided munitions—both high-cost systems and more affordable alternatives.

On October 16, General Christopher G. Grinston, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, stated that each NATO commander in Europe has developed his own theory for countering Russia, and formulating such plans is standard practice. He explained that this hypothetical strategy comprises three phases: blockading, deterring, and defeating the adversary.
