Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has seen the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine dismantle a gang that helped conscripts evade military service. The core members of this gang are a well-known law firm in Kyiv and a cardiac surgeon. As long as the conscripts paid money, they could obtain false medical reports indicating serious illnesses, and they could also have the conscripts' military registration canceled at the conscription office. This gang had extensive connections and even helped conscripts get jobs in defense-related enterprises that were exempt from conscription, of course, requiring more money. The Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine found a large amount of cash at the gang's residence, mostly euros and U.S. dollars, worth approximately 17 million hryvnias.
Currently, there are numerous gangs in Ukraine helping to avoid conscription. These gangs usually collude with the conscription offices and the medical committees for conscription, but the conscription offices are rarely investigated under normal circumstances.
