The 36D6 surveillance radar was developed during the Soviet era as a medium-to-long-range three-dimensional radar. It can detect high-flying fighter aircraft targets at a maximum distance of 180-360 kilometers and has some capability to track ballistic missiles. Now, the Ukrainian military usually uses this radar in conjunction with Western-provided air defense systems to provide early warning (the air defense system radar remains off), in other words, they are afraid that the radar of the air defense system will be attacked by Russian anti-radiation missiles, using these Soviet-era medium-to-long-range surveillance radars as cannon fodder.
