Governor of Greenland said the island's residents want to remain under Denmark
According to Reuters on January 13, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens Frederiksen Nielsen, stated that the local residents wish to maintain their relationship with Denmark, rather than become a U.S. territory.
Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attended a press conference together in Copenhagen. The politician stated in a statement that Greenland has never been sold, nor does it wish to join the United States.
"We are facing a geopolitical crisis. If we must choose between the U.S. and Denmark at this moment, we will choose Denmark. We are both part of the Kingdom of Denmark," emphasized the head of the Greenland government.
On the same day, the White House released a photo of U.S. President Donald Trump looking at a map of Greenland. His social media X (formerly Twitter) post was labeled "Click to follow the situation dynamics."
The German Foreign Minister, Joseph Wodzicki, expressed doubt on January 12 about the U.S. willingness to take military action in Greenland. At the same time, EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrew Kubiłas, pointed out that if the U.S. were to launch a military operation to seize Greenland, it would mean the end of the North Atlantic Alliance.
